Teachers' Corner -- Research Opportunities for K-12 Students
Use LIGO seismometer data to build a research project. LIGO is a partner in Interactions in Understanding the Universe (I2U2), a NSF-funded project that makes large-project science data available to students and teachers via a Web connection and a browser. I2U2 provides electronic laboratories (e-Labs) that allow users to request and plot data sets. Students can use the LIGO e-Lab to explore earthquake behavior or other forms of natural or human-generated seismicity. The LIGO e-lab makes available nearly 200,000 data points each day from seismometers and other sensors, providing students with wide flexibility in the types of inquiry projects that are possible. This resource is available at no cost, brought to you by I2U2's server-side software that requires no downloads to your local computers.
LIGO also has collaborated with students and teachers on hardware projects, such as the building and testing of an interferometer.
