From a 3-year grant Tim Olsen (professor at SKC, and LSC member) wrote, SKC, Montana State University (MSU), and NASA conducted their first Space Camp for local high school students from the Flathead Indian Reservation, in western Montana.

The grant's title is Space Science Education and Professional Development at Salish Kootenai College and Flathead Reservation Schools.  The grant program is Minority University and College Education and Research Partnership Initiative in Space Science -2003 (NASA NRA 03-OSS-03).  It is funded by the Office of Space Science and Office of Education, NASA.  Tim is the Principal Investigator.   Co-investigators are  Roger McClure and Regina Sievert (SKC) and Jeff Adams, Charles Kankelborg, David Klumpar, and David McKenzie from Montana State University.

The 2-week camp encompasses a portion of the grant focused on high school students of grades 8-12.  Another portion of the grant covers summer internships for undergrads attending SKC.  Other portions of the grant include:  a middle/high school annual professional development workshop on space and curriculum development incorporating space science at SKC.  The summer camp consists of a camp-out on Flathead Lake, a multi-day trip to MSU, various presentations, and other activities (such as hikes, rafting, etc.)

I presented a talk on the physics of waves, gravity waves, and LIGO.  I then set up a few hands-on demos for students to tinker around with after the talk.
